Fund Raising for Equal Opportunities

Equal opportunity is a fairly vague term with no really precise definition. In broad terms it references an approach to providing the kind of social environment where people are not excluded from an activity for any particular and unfair reason. This activity could refer to education, employment, health care, or any other activity in a society that needs to be accessed by the wider population. Equal opportunity is a term used to describe an ideal situation where any minority or seemingly disadvantaged group is not excluded from any situation that they might want to engage in.

fund-raisingThis context is very wide and could refer to anyone from a female to a disabled person, from a homosexual to a war veteran. This huge scope is the reason why there is no consensus regarding a precise definition, but basically it means giving everyone a fair go in any situation.

Many equal opportunity campaigns have been waged in the past few decades to educate people on existing inequalities in society. These campaigns sometimes also actively advance particular solutions to these problems, maybe in a certain area like health or education. A lot of these campaigns use advertising in an attempt to educate people to open up to different groups who may not have been getting equal access to a certain resource or opportunity. Any equal opportunities campaign is going to need fundraising in order to carry out this advertising and get the message across to people. An equal opportunity campaign might also funnel money and resources into the disadvantaged parts of the population in order to get them more access to necessary resources. This might mean putting money into fixing housing projects or into building a new hospital.

Because inequality in society is a very important social issue that affects a nation’s security and reputation, most governments are willing to take care of at least part of the financing for these campaigns. They sometimes do not pay for the entire campaign however and need the help of individuals or community groups to foot some of the bill as well. Indeed many campaigns for equal opportunities are organised by government bodies if they see that a need is there. For example, in Australia the local indigenous population are still fairly disadvantaged in terms of education and health services, and for this reason they have a lower life expectancy than average. The national government in Australia runs and pays for a number of equal opportunities projects to try and fix this situation of inequality. Similar situations to this exist all over the world with particular races and ethnic groups normally being the most disadvantaged within a society.

Individuals may also have a good fundraising idea that can help with issues of equality, and some organisations are set up to act on these fundraising ideas if they are felt to be beneficial enough. Equal opportunity campaigns are mainly run and funded by government agencies in order to try and develop truly equal and fair societies. It is also common however for particular individuals or organisations to work by themselves or with these government bodies in order to also affect worthwhile changes in a culture.
